Synthesizing information means combining ideas, facts, or details from different sources to create new understanding or draw conclusions. Students take separate pieces of information they have learned and put them together in a meaningful way to form their own ideas or solve problems.

Why It Matters

Synthesis is a higher-order thinking skill that helps students become active learners rather than passive receivers of information. When students synthesize, they develop critical thinking abilities, make connections between different subjects, and create deeper understanding of topics. This skill is essential for research projects, problem-solving, and making informed decisions throughout their academic and personal lives.

When to Use In Reading After reading multiple books about the same topic When comparing different characters or stories While researching a topic using various sources When making predictions based on evidence from the text In Writing Creating reports that use information from several sources Writing opinion pieces that include supporting evidence Developing creative stories that combine real facts with imagination Making arguments using multiple examples In Other Subjects Solving math word problems that require multiple steps Understanding science concepts by combining observations and research Learning about historical events by examining different perspectives Examples

Reading:
After reading three books about penguins, I learned that they live in cold places, have special feathers to keep warm, and take turns caring for their babies. This shows me that penguin families work together to survive in harsh environments.

Research:
From my library book, I learned that recycling helps the environment. From the school website, I found out our town has recycling programs. From interviewing my neighbor, I discovered many people don't know about these programs. I think our school should teach families more about local recycling.

Science:
In our plant experiment, I noticed that plants near the window grew taller. My research showed plants need sunlight. My friend's plant died in the dark closet. All this information tells me that light is necessary for plants to grow properly.
