Digits are the fundamental numerical symbols used in mathematics to represent values. The ten symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 form the basic building blocks of our number system. These ten digits can be combined in various arrangements to represent any numerical value. For instance, the number 65 is formed by combining the digits 6 and 5, making it a two-digit number. The development of these symbols arose from historical necessity as human civilization expanded into scientific and trade endeavors, creating a need for standardized numerical representation.

Digits form different categories of numbers based on how many digits are used together. Two-digit numbers range from 10 to 99, with the tens place occupied by digits 1 through 9. Four-digit numbers span from 1,000 to 9,999. The place value system gives each digit a specific value based on its position in the number. While a digit's face value remains constant regardless of position (the digit itself), its place value changes depending on where it appears in the number. For example, in 283, the digit 2 has a face value of 2 but a place value of 200 (2 hundreds).
