Hundreds refers to the third place value in our base-10 number system, coming after the ones place and the tens place. The hundreds place is where we put a digit that represents groups of 100. For example, in the number 347, the digit 3 is in the hundreds place, showing that there are 3 hundreds (or 300) in this number. Each digit in the hundreds place is worth 100 times its face value—so 5 in the hundreds place equals 500.

In our decimal system, the hundreds place is important because it helps us work with larger numbers in an organized way. We can think of hundreds as groups of ten tens or groups of one hundred ones. When we count by hundreds (100, 200, 300...), we're adding a group of 100 each time. Understanding hundreds helps build the foundation for working with even larger numbers like thousands and millions, and is essential for many math operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of larger numbers.

Examples of Hundreds Example 1: Identifying the Hundreds Place Problem:

In the number 856, which digit is in the hundreds place and what is its value?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Write out the number and identify the place value of each digit.

In 856, we have: 8 in the hundreds place 5 in the tens place 6 in the ones place

Step 2, Find the value of the digit in the hundreds place.

Since 8 is in the hundreds place, its value is 8 hundreds.

Step 3, Convert 8 hundreds to a number.

8 hundreds = 800

Step 4, Verify by breaking down the entire number.

856 = 800 + 50 + 6

Step 5, State the answer.

The digit 8 is in the hundreds place, and its value is 800. Example 2: Adding Numbers with Hundreds Problem:

Add 342 + 251.

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Add the digits in the ones place.

2 ones + 1 one = 3 ones

Step 2, Add the digits in the tens place.

4 tens + 5 tens = 9 tens

Step 3, Add the digits in the hundreds place.

3 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 5 hundreds

Step 4, Combine all place values to get the answer.

5 hundreds + 9 tens + 3 ones = 593

Step 5, Write the complete answer.

342 + 251 = 593 Example 3: Counting by Hundreds Problem:

Complete the counting sequence by hundreds: 300, 400, ___, ___, 700

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Identify the pattern in the given numbers.

The sequence starts at 300 and increases by 100 each time. 300, 400, ...

Step 2, Find the next number after 400 by adding 100.

400 + 100 = 500

Step 3, Find the next number after 500 by adding 100 again.

500 + 100 = 600

Step 4, Check that the pattern continues correctly.

600 + 100 = 700

Step 5, Fill in the missing numbers in the sequence.

300, 400, 500, 600, 700

Step 6, Verify that each number in the sequence increases by exactly 100.

400 - 300 = 100 500 - 400 = 100 600 - 500 = 100 700 - 600 = 100 Comments(3)BBookWormBaileyNovember 5, 2025This glossary def of 'hundreds' is great! I've used it to help my students grasp place value. The examples made it super easy for them.
