A line segment is a part of a line that connects two specific points. Unlike a full line that extends endlessly in both directions, a line segment has two fixed endpoints and a measurable length. The length of a line segment is the distance between its two endpoints, which can be measured in various units such as millimeters, centimeters, feet, or inches.

Line segments are typically represented using a bar symbol over the endpoints. For example, a line segment with endpoints P and Q would be written as PQ‾\overline{PQ}PQ​. In our everyday lives, we can find line segments in many objects such as the edges of a table, sides of geometric shapes, matchsticks, pencils, and the edges of rulers.
