A minuend is a fundamental component of subtraction operations, representing the starting point or the number from which another value is subtracted. In any subtraction equation, three key elements are present: the minuend, the subtrahend, and the difference. The minuend appears as the first number in a subtraction sentence, and when we subtract the subtrahend from it, we obtain the difference. For instance, in the equation 8−5=38 - 5 = 38−5=3, the number 8 serves as the minuend.

When working with the vertical or column method of subtraction, the minuend is always positioned at the top. An important concept associated with minuends involves regrouping (or borrowing). This technique becomes necessary when a minuend digit is smaller than its corresponding subtrahend digit. In such cases, we borrow 1 from the next higher place value to increase the minuend digit's value, making subtraction possible.
