Significant figures (or significant digits) are the number of digits in a value or measurement that are necessary to determine its accuracy and precision. They refer to the reliable digits in a given number that convey accurate information, helping us understand the level of precision in scientific or technical measurements such as length, mass, or volume. Significant digits contribute to the precision of a number and are essential in rounding off measurement values or calculation outcomes.

There are specific rules to determine significant figures. All non-zero digits are significant. Zeros between non-zero digits are significant. Zeros to the left of the first non-zero digit after a decimal point are not significant, as they only show the position of the decimal point. Zeros on the right of a decimal point without non-zero digits after them are significant. Similarly, zeros on the right of the last non-zero digit after a decimal point (trailing zeros) are significant.
