A trapezoid is a four-sided shape (quadrilateral) with exactly one pair of parallel sides. These parallel sides are called bases, while the non-parallel sides are known as legs. The perpendicular distance between the parallel sides is the altitude or height of the trapezoid. The median of a trapezoid is a line segment connecting the midpoints of the non-parallel sides, and its length equals the average of the bases.

Trapezoids come in three main types, each with distinct characteristics. A right trapezoid has a pair of right angles. An isosceles trapezoid has non-parallel sides of equal length, creating a more symmetrical shape. A scalene trapezoid has neither equal angles nor equal sides, making it the most irregular type of trapezoid. All trapezoids share common properties, including parallel bases and a sum of interior angles equal to 360 degrees.

Examples of Trapezoid Example 1: Identifying Types of Trapezoids Problem:

Fill in the blanks.

The trapezoid having non-parallel sides equal is known as ______________. _____________ trapezoid has a pair of adjacent angles equal to 90°. Neither the sides nor the angles of _______________ trapezoid are equal. Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Recall the definition of an isosceles trapezoid. An isosceles trapezoid has non-parallel sides (legs) of equal length, so the first blank is "isosceles trapezoid."

Step 2, Think about what makes a trapezoid a "right" trapezoid. A right trapezoid has a pair of adjacent angles that are right angles (90°), so the second blank is "Right."

Step 3, Remember what defines a scalene trapezoid. A scalene trapezoid has neither equal sides nor equal angles, so the third blank is "scalene."

Example 2: Finding the Length of a Median Problem:

Find the length of median PQ of given trapezoid.

Base AD = 8 cm Base BC = 30 cm

Finding the Length of a Median

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Recall the formula for finding the median of a trapezoid. The median equals half the sum of the parallel sides (bases).

Step 2, Substitute the given values into the formula: Median = 12×(sum of the bases)=AD+BC2\frac{1}{2} \times (\text{sum of the bases}) = \frac{AD + BC}{2}21×(sum of the bases)=2AD+BC

Step 3, Calculate the median length: Median = 8+302\frac{8 + 30}{2}28+30 cm = 382\frac{38}{2}238 cm = 19 cm

Step 4, So, the length of median PQ is 19 cm.

Example 3: Calculating the Perimeter of a Trapezoid Problem:

Find the perimeter of a given trapezoid with sides:

PQ = 15 cm QR = 6 cm RS = 20 cm SP = 5 cm

Calculating the Perimeter of a Trapezoid

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Remember that the perimeter of a shape is the sum of all its sides.

Step 2, Add up the lengths of all four sides: Perimeter = PQ + QR + RS + SP

Step 3, Substitute the given values: Perimeter = (15 + 6 + 20 + 5) cm

Step 4, Calculate the final answer: Perimeter = 46 cm
