Subtracting time is the mathematical process of finding the difference between two time values expressed in hours, minutes, and seconds. Unlike regular number subtraction, time subtraction requires special consideration of time conversion principles: there are 60 seconds in 1 minute, 60 minutes in 1 hour, and 24 hours in a day. This process helps us calculate elapsed time or the duration between two time points, which is essential for many practical applications like determining journey times or class durations.

Time subtraction can be performed in different formats depending on the situation. In the standard 12-hour clock format, we distinguish between a.m. (first 12 hours of the day) and p.m. (12 noon to 11:59 at night). When subtracting times that are both in a.m. or both in p.m., we can subtract directly. However, when subtracting between a.m. and p.m. times, conversion to the 24-hour format or alternative methods are required. We can also subtract specific hours and minutes from a given time to find an earlier time point.

Examples of Subtracting Time Example 1: Basic Time Subtraction Problem:

What is 4:10 - 1:05?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Compare the minutes of both times.

First time: 10 minutes Second time: 5 minutes Since 10 > 5, no regrouping is needed.

Step 2, Subtract the minutes.

10 - 5 = 5 minutes

Step 3, Subtract the hours.

4 - 1 = hours

Step 4, Therefore, the difference between 4:10 and 1:05 is 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Example 2: Time Subtraction with Regrouping Problem:

What is 5:10 - 1:35?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Compare the minutes of both times.

First time: 10 minutes Second time: 35 minutes Since 10

Step 2, Borrow 1 hour from the hours in the first time.

Convert 1 hour to 60 minutes: 1 hour = 60 minutes Add these 60 minutes to the original 10 minutes: 10 + 60 = 70 minutes Reduce the hours by 1: 5 - 1 = 4 hours

Step 3, Subtract the minutes.

70 - 35 = 35 minutes

Step 4, Subtract the remaining hours.

4 - 1 = 3 hours

Step 5, The difference between 5:10 and 1:35 is 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Example 3: Time Subtraction with AM and PM Problem:

What is the duration between 9:58 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Calculate the duration from 9:58 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

From 9:58 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.: 2 minutes From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.: 2 hours Total: 2 hours and 2 minutes

Step 2, Calculate the duration from 12:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

From 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: 4 hours From 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.: 15 minutes Total: 4 hours and 15 minutes

Step 3, Add both durations.

2 hours 2 minutes + 4 hours 15 minutes = 6 hours 17 minutes

Step 4, The duration between 9:58 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. is 6 hours and 17 minutes.
