Take away is another term for subtraction, which is the math operation where we remove or take away some objects from a group. When we take away, the total amount gets smaller. We use the minus sign (−) to show take away or subtraction operations. For example, if we have 888 apples and take away 333 apples, we write it as 8−3=58 - 3 = 58−3=5.

Take away helps us solve many everyday math problems like finding out how many items are left after some are removed, finding the difference between two numbers, or comparing quantities. In take away problems, we start with a larger number (called the minuend) and remove a smaller number (called the subtrahend) to find what's left (the difference). Understanding take away is an important building block for more complex math skills.

Examples of Take Away Example 1: Basic Take Away with Counters Problem:

James has 777 toy cars. He gives 444 toy cars to his friend. How many toy cars does James have now?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Find out how many toy cars James had at the start. James had 777 toy cars.

Step 2, Find out how many toy cars James gave away. James gave 444 toy cars to his friend.

Step 3, Set up the take away number sentence: 7−4=?7 - 4 = ?7−4=?

Step 4, Count backward 444 from 777, or count how many are left after taking away 444 from 777.

Step 5, The answer is 333. James has 333 toy cars left.

Example 2: Two-Digit Take Away without Regrouping Problem:

Emma had 565656 stickers. She used 232323 stickers to make a card. How many stickers does she have left?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Write the problem as: 56−23=?56 - 23 = ?56−23=?

Step 2, Start with the ones place. Take 333 away from 666: 6−3=36 - 3 = 36−3=3

Step 3, Move to the tens place. Take 222 away from 555: 5−2=35 - 2 = 35−2=3

Step 4, Put the digits together to get the answer: 30+3=3330 + 3 = 3330+3=33. Emma has 333333 stickers left.

Example 3: Two-Digit Take Away with Regrouping Problem:

Sam has 424242 marbles. He loses 171717 marbles. How many marbles does Sam have now?

Step-by-step solution:

Step 1, Write the problem as: 42−17=?42 - 17 = ?42−17=?

Step 2, Look at the ones place. We need to take 777 away from 222, but 777 is bigger than 222. We need to regroup.

Step 3, Borrow 1 ten from the tens place. The 444 in 424242 becomes 333, and the 222 becomes 121212.

Step 4, Now take away in the ones place: 12−7=512 - 7 = 512−7=5

Step 5, Take away in the tens place: 3−1=23 - 1 = 23−1=2

Step 6, The answer is 20+5=2520 + 5 = 2520+5=25. Sam has 252525 marbles left.
